1.Wedding Uchikake (Formal Outer Kimono) with Famous Places in Japan

This robe was made for the 1930 wedding of a women who married into a Kobe sake brewery. It is decorated with various famous sights, including the temples Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto and Byōdō-in in Uji, as well as Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima. The artist painted directly on the silk with synthetic dyes to create the Western-influenced design.

Wearing three-layered robes for weddings was popular for brides of the merchant class during the Edo period (1615–1868); the tradition continued into the 20th century among the upper class. These two robes were worn layered together, black over red, under the flowing Wedding Uchikake (Formal Outer Kimono) with Famous Places in Japan also on view.
