The character Shōjō from the eponymous Noh play here wears a lavish robe reminiscent of a Noh theater costume. A nearly identical Shōjō doll is preserved in the imperial convent of Hōkyo-ji in Kyoto. It was given in 1833 by Emperor Kōkaku to the nun Rikinni, a princess who was suffering from smallpox. This doll too was probably used to help cure an ailing princess.
