Pagodas, or stupas, are reliquaries for the Buddha’s bodily or symbolic remains. This comes from a set of 84,000 produced by Qian Hongchu (929–988), the Chinese King of Wuyue, as a gesture of his fervent Buddhist faith, following the model of the ancient Indian King Ashoka.
