This imposing doll was made around 1881 to celebrate the birth of a grandson to an Imperial Household Ministry official. The head, hands, and feet are made of molded paulownia sawdust coated with gofun (a white pigment made from crushed shells). The body is made of stuffed fabric so that it can be dressed and undressed.
