Overview

Sake Decanter in the Shape of a Box, with Clamshells

Museum No.
HO56

Since ancient times, clamshells have symbolized wealth, which gives this piece an auspicious feel. While it may look like a luxurious box, it actually functions as a container for sake (rice wine). Maybe it was originally part of a portable picnic set. The red-knobbed plug at the corner might be a later replacement for a lidded metal spout.
