This un-tailored cloth is for a kamishimo--a vest with extended shoulders (kataginu) and a split skirt (hakama), worn over a kimono. It served as a sort of business suit for men of the warrior class. Kamishimo were usually stencil-dyed with tiny, repeating komon patterns, often with family crests. Some clans had a designated “brand” pattern.
