This landscape by literati Japanese painter Kinoshita Itsuun depicts outdoor tea preparation, distant sailboats, and other elements from the Tang-dynasty Chinese poem inscribed at the top: A rustic spring and a smoking fire, amid white clouds; We sit drinking fragrant tea, admiring these mountains. Below the cliff, our boat is tied, we cannot bear to leave; In the green valley, flowing water murmurs at dusk. (“Drinking Tea at Green Mountain Pond with Layman Yuan,” by Ling Yi, 728–752)
