The “mountain gorge” of the title actually refers to the Hozu River Gorge (Hozukyō) near Arashiyama in Kyoto. In 1928, the up-and-coming artist Zhang Daqian visited Japan to look at old Chinese paintings here, and he took a boat ride down the river with a Mr. Wada. Could that have been the then Kyoto National Museum director Wada Fujio?
