The Three Sages are Shakyamuni, founder of Buddhism; Confucius, founder of Confucianism; and Laozi, founder of Taoism. This is a copy of an earlier Ming painting, in which the baby monkey is replaced by a wasps’ nest. The characters for “monkey and wasp” in Chinese sound like different characters meaning “high status.”
