This bell was used in early Esoteric Buddhist ceremonies for the Thirteen Buddhas, who are associated with funerary rituals. The five Sanskrit characters on the side represent the Buddha Dainichi (Vairocana) and (moving clockwise) the Wisdom King Fudō (Acala), the Buddha Shakyamuni, the Bodhisattva Monju (Mañjuśrī), and the Bodhisattva Fugen (Samantabhadra).
