You may notice pronged implements such as this on the altar of some temples. Esoteric Buddhist monks pick these up during rituals to help vanquish their worldly illusions and become one with the Buddha. This vajra (J: gokosho) originally came from a Tendai-sect temple in Yokawa on Mount Hiei, northwest of Kyoto.
