Emperor Go-Yōzei’s (1571–1617) cultural accomplishments, in addition to fostering groundbreaking changes in the realm of calligraphy, included his reintroduction of classical texts into contemporary consciousness. One way in which he did this was by publishing this 1599 woodblock-printed edition of the mythological first section of the ancient Nihon shoki, one of the two oldest histories of Japan.
