Yupian is a 30-volume dictionary of Chinese characters compiled by Gu Yewang (519–581). The second oldest of its kind, it organizes characters by radical, with fanqie pronunciations and definitions. On the back of the manuscript is a Buddhist text dated 1021, telling us that this dictionary has been in Japan for over a millennium.
