Tanzaku are narrow paper slips used for vertically brushing Japanese poems. This box has an elegantly arching shape with lacy carrot ferns (shinobugusa) in sprinkled gold makie and painted black lacquer. It contains 77 verses by Kawada Jun (1882–1966), who was poetry teacher to the Heisei emperor when he was crown prince.
