The kotsuzumi is a double-headed hand drum used in Noh and other performance traditions. Before use, two round iron-rimmed leather membranes are placed on either end of the hourglass-shaped body and lashed in place with braided hemp cords. The elegant designs here are done in flat makie, made by sprinkling metal dust into wet lacquer.
