In 17th-century Holland, it was typical for the mistress of a household to wear a long chain from her waist with keys and sewing implements. This is the only known sewing box of its type decorated with Japanese lacquer techniques. We might imagine it to have been a custom order by an employee of the Dutch East India Company for the woman he loved.
