These rubbings were taken from the lavishly lacquered interior of the Otamaya of Kōdai-ji, located south of Kyoto’s Yasaka Shrine, which enshrines statues of the ruling warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537–1598) and his wife Nene. Such rubbings can likely never be made again, but they provide important information for researchers.
