This lectern (bible stand) features the initials IHS (Jesus) within a crest of the Jesuits, a religious order introduced to Japan by Francis Xavier (1506–1552). It is made from a single piece of wood that has been split and carved to create a hinged, folding stand, a structure ofen used for Quran stands. The plain wooden stand may have been imported into Japan for lacquering and shell inlay.
