On the morning of New Year's Eve, 1788 (Tenmei 8), there was a fire in the district of Miyagawa in Kyoto. The fire spread to the Kamo River to the east, Senbon Street to the west, Shichijô Street to the south, and Kuramaguchi Street to the north. It was the first great conflagration since the city had burnt to the ground in the Ônin disturbance. Although this work has been attributed to Maruyama Ôkyo (1722-95), the style is rather closer to that of Yokoyama Kazan (1784-1837) of the Kishi school.
