This inkstone on raised hoof-like legs features a round unglazed grinding surface. Similar examples have been found with celadon glaze. In Japan, copies of such inkstones were made in Sue ware and other stoneware. Chinese instokes have been excavated from the sites of Nara (710–794) and Heian (794–1185) period temples and offical buildings.
