Overview

Hina Dolls with Palace

Museum No.
IK772

While hina in Edo (Tokyo) were displayed on large, multi-tier altars with lacquered furnishings, doll displays in Kyoto and Osaka tended to have two or three tiers, often with a “palace” (goten) on the top tier and included a kitchen hearth (okudo) among the furnishings. A Kyoto lumber merchant family ordered this set for their daughter’s first doll festival in 1876.
