Two Japanese macaques with red faces and short tails sit happily together in an old plum tree on the lid of this inkstone case, which has an early summer scene on its underside. The meaning of this monkey motif is lost to us today, but it is executed in high quality makie using powder and carefully placed flakes of gold.
