This hanging scroll is composed of segments from two missives written by Emperor Gofukakusa (1243-1304) to his son Emperor Fushimi. The emperor’s powerful, magnanimous brushstrokes, while taking after ancient styles, includes his own arrangement, making it especially striking. The first letter, dated the third day of the first month of 1290 (Shoo 3), pertains to the appointment of Kujo Moronori (1273-1320) as Minister of the Left. The second letter relates to the illness of Emperor Fushimi’s wife Empress Eifuku and is thought to date to 1291 (Shoo 4). The back sides of both pieces were used as paper to copy the Lotus Sutra (J., Hokekyo, designated Important Cultural Property, Kyoto National Museum) by Priest Erin (n.d.) of Kosan-ji Temple.
