The green glaze and relief scrolls on this jar exemplify the three-color lead-glazed ceramics known as Huanan sancai. In the Edo period (1615–1868), the Japanese were particularly fond of Huanan sancai tea-leaf storage jars. They are related to the Cochin (C: Jiaozhi) wares of Vietnam and southern China, traded throughout East and SE Asia in the 1500s and 1600s.
