Niwada Shigeari (1378-1440) was the son of Niwada Tsuneari. His sister, Kôshi, married Prince Fushiminomiya Sadafusa (1372-1456; also known as Gosukôin) and gave birth to the Emperor Gohanazono (1419-70, r. 1428-64). This letter was written by Shigeari when the monk Tokugô Gobô, probably of Kôfuku-ji Temple in Nara, was to travel to a certain place. Traces of margins indicate that the letter used to be made up of a honshi ("main section") and a raishi ("accompanying section").
