This high-quality work executed in dynamic ink brushstrokes pictorializes Tenjin, the deified spirit of the courtier Sugawara no Michizane (845–903). According to legend, he traveled to China to receive the dharma transmission from the Chan master Wuzhun Shifan (1178–1249). It bears a seal by Motonobu, the founder of the Kano school of painting.
