Kōnen (1120–1203), a priest at the Kyoto temple Kajū-ji, completed his Compendium of Mandalas (Mandara shū) in 1173. This is a 1290 copy of that work by the priests Zenchi, who painted its images, and Kyōben—both priests at Kōsan-ji Temple, where Buddhist practice was grounded in Kegon sect and esoteric teachings.
