Storm clouds loom over a shimmering white sea. The title of this work, from the poem at top, references a line from the ancient ode “Rhapsody on the Sea” (Haifu) by Mu Hua (3rd–4th c.). Shanghai oil painter Liu Haisu painted this on Mount Putuo—a sacred island associated with Mount Potalaka, said to be the abode of the bodhisattva Guanyin (Avalokiteśvara).
