Manufactured during the Koryo period (918-1392), this Korean mirror was based on a Japanese prototype of a late Heian period (794-1185) eight-lobed mirror with a design of auspicious flowers and paired phoenixes that was brought to the Korean Peninsula. The representation of the large phoenixes, facing each other with wings outstretched, and the flat outer rim are characteristic of eight-cusped Koryo mirrors with a design of auspicious flowers and paired phoenixes. This mirror is a large-scale example of the type. The quality of the bronze of which it was made as well as the condition of the casting are extremely fine.
