In this letter by Emperor Gofukakusa (1234-1304, r. 1246-59), he cedes the Gotsuchimikadodono and the Shinchôkôdô-lands held in Oshinobe (presently Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture)-to the princess Eishi. The Gotsuchimikadodono was an estate that had been used regularly as a palace by the imperial family. The Shinchôkôdô, a temple on the Gotsuchimikadodono grounds, owned a large manor outside the estate. The words "Gosho to" at the beginning of the letter refer to these manorial lands.
Because it is addressed to a woman, the letter is written in lyrically arranged kana ("phonetic alphabet") script. The addition of the date, month, and year, and the signature make this particular example very different from ordinary kana letters. This is due to the fact that this letter also functioned as a title deed. Emperor Gofukakusa, whose given name was Hisahito, was the third son of Emperor Saga (1220-72, r. 1242-46).
