This unlined robe (hitoe) also belonged to the Imperial family. The design composition, featuring a standing tree with embroidered outline against a red, figured crepe (chirimen) ground and the embroidery, which employs relatively thick thread, is typical of robes worn at the Meiji court. The dazzling, rather ostentatious crimson color derives from chemical dye.
