Overview

Gilt Bronze Hokyoin Stupa

Museum No.
EK262

Belief in the spiritual power of Buddhist relics (J., shari) was widespread during the medieval period in Japan, and various forms of reliquaries were produced at that time. Reliquaries in the form of multi-leveled jeweled stupas (J., hôkyôintô) became popular later in the Muromachi period (1392-1573). Relics and plaques with engraved images of the Buddha were placed in a circular crystal window within the central axis. This stupa reliquary features a roof consisting of many more tiers than ordinarily found. The pierced metalwork decoration is exceptional, even among other reliquaries of the same period.
