Xu Beihong was a major Western-style painter of modern China. Here he uses light colors over bold, simplified ink lines—different from traditional Western-style brushwork—to depict a placid water buffalo munching undergrowth. Xu would have been familiar with cows from his hometown of Yixing, Jiangsu province; he was even a cowherd as a boy.
