The two holes to pass a string through suggest that this work was originally a hanging mirror. It has no decorations and was probably made as a temple offering. The inscription reads "The auspicious day of the sixth month, Meireki 1 (1655)," together with the artisan's name, "Matsumura Inabanokami," in large letters. Matsumura Inabanokami was a renowned mirror maker from Kyoto, with a studio in the west Gojô Teramachi district at the time.
