Among 50 poetry matches in Jidaifugô utaawase (E., Poetry Matches of Various Periods), this piece depicts a match between Prince Tomohira (964-1009) and Cloistered Emperor Gotoba (1180-1239, r. 1183-98). Jidaifugô utaawase is a handscroll illustrating imaginary poetry matches between pairs of poets who lived at different times. Because the poem by Cloistered Emperor Gotoba is described as a "poor poem," Jidaifugô utaawase was probably compiled by him. This particular piece includes poems and depiction of the poets. Though rather formalized, the brushwork of this hakubyôga, or monochrome painting with white background, is delicate and elegant. It probably dates from the late Kamakura period (1185-1333).
