This is an eiso, or "draft," of seven poems by Emperor Gonara (1496-1557, r. 1526-1557), written on the theme of "bush clover at dawn" (J., akatsuki hagi), for which he sought comments from a tenja ("evaluator") in advance of a poetry gathering. The mark attached to the first poem on each topic was added by the tenja. The tenja gave the first poem, "Sara ni mata," especially high marks, taking the trouble to append the words of praise, "Admirable! Admirable!," after the poem. Moreover, the tenja corrected the ending of the first poem on the theme, "banked fires" (J., uzumibi), from "keru" to "nuto." Since his father, Emperor Gokashiwabara (1464-1526, r. 1500-26), often evaluated Gonara's poems, the comments that appear on the poems here may be those of the former emperor.
