Of the two poems written by Emperor Gonara (1496-1557, r. 1526-57) on the theme, "First bush warbler of spring," "Mountain chill" (J., Yama samumi) and "At dawn" (J., Kyô ni akete), the first has annotations by a judge, who gave the poem a good mark. However, three suggested corrections-such as "change 'uguisu mo' to 'uguisu no'"-shows us the severity of the judge's guidance.
Gonara is known as a sovereign, who managed to endeavor in his study of the arts and hand down to later ages the culture of the aristocracy, while struggling to survive in poverty during a time of war. Moreover, he is also famous for personally copying The Heart Sutra (J., Hannya shingyô) and ceaselessly offering up earnest prayers in order to help the common people, who were suffering from pestilence.
