Emperor Gokashiwabara (1464-1526, r.1500-26) was the son of Emperor Gotsuchimikado (1442-1500, r. 1464-1500). His given name was Katsuhito. Gokashiwabara was well known for his skill in poetry, both Chinese and Japanese. He had studied the composition of thirty-one syllable poems in Japanese (J. waka) with Sanjônishi Sanetaka (1455-1537), and his private collection of poems is titled, Hakugyokushû (Collection of Oaken Jewels). He was also renowned as a calligrapher, and in later ages his writing style came to be known as the Gokashiwabara-in School. Both his Chinese and Japanese writing are characterized by luxuriant brushwork.
