Emperor Gotsuchimikado (1442-1500, r. 1464-1500), whose given name was Fusahito, was the eldest son of Emperor Gohanazano (1419-70, r. 1429-64). His mother was Kakimon'in Nobuko. Not long after he ascended the throne, the Ônin disturbance occurred. He reigned for 36 years in this age which was characterized by inferiors overthrowing their superiors. Among his collections of poetry is the Kôjin shû. It is not known when these poems on kaishi paper were written, but the relaxed brushstrokes convey very well the calm character of the emperor.
