Zhang Lu came from the city of Kaifeng in present day Henan Province. His pseudonym was Pingshan. Although this work appears to have been inspired by the Song poet Sushi's Ode to Chibi (a poem about the sublime scenery of Chibi), here, the thick ink washes of the rocks, trees, and thickets, and flat and course brushstrokes found in the later works of Zhe school artists, are most noteable. This style of painting was later criticized as a denigration of traditional schools.
