Zean (1486-1581) was a monk at the temple of Shôkoku-ji, Kyoto, whose hôki ("Buddhist name") was Juin, and dôgô ("Buddhist surname") was Shiken. He succeeded the temple following Zuikei Shûhô and Mokudô Jushô, and lived at Keiun-in, a sub-temple of the Shôkoku-ji. He also lived at Jiun-an in the Kitaiwakura area, and served at the temple of Saihô-ji in Kyoto. Zean was skilled in painting, and his brushwork was influenced by the style of Sôami (?-1525), who was patronized by Ashikaga Yoshimasa (1436-90). This work, which depicts eight different views of China's Dongting Lake and its surroundings, is one of Zean's paintings that follows the style of Sôami with a soft touch in the brushwork. The composition of four views each in one hanging scroll makes this masterpiece an interesting one.
