Overview

Set of Six Buddhist Ritual Vessels with the Inscription "Toji

Museum No.
EK252

This set of six bowls and their accompanying saucers was used in the ceremonial rituals of Esoteric Buddhism. The bowls and saucers would be lined up on the altar to hold such offerings as flowers and incense. The tall feet and relatively small mouths of the bowls are characteristic of the Kamakura period (1185-1333). The temple name "Tô-ji" on the underside of each piece was inscribed at the time of production, indicating that these six bowls were used at Tô-ji Temple (officially known as Kyôôgokoku-ji) in Kyoto. Found quite recently, they are very valuable as a complete set dating back to the Kamakura period (1185-1333).
