This figurine of a bull would have been displayed as an alcove ornament to celebrate the Year of the Ox. Bulls are associated with Gozu Tennō, worshiped since ancient times as a deity able to cure pandemic illness. The Buddhist jewel on its back likely contained a bull’s gallstone, thought to be effective against various diseases.
