This sutra case (J., kyôbitsu) was used for housing a Tripitaka ("Buddhist canon," J., Issaikyo) dedicated in 1185 (Bunji 1) to Jingo-ji Temple by the abdicated Emperor Goshirakawa (1127-92, r. 1156-58) by way of a prayer for the abdicated Emperor Toba (1103-56, r. 1107-1123). At the temple exist 45 sutra cases of a similar kind. They, including this work, are designated as Important Cultural Properties along with the sutras and sutra wrappings. The lid, with its rim, and a slightly raised body are characteristic of works of the late Heian period (794-1185). Inscriptions on the right and left sides of the box in red lacquer indicate that this was the 21st sutra case, which housed 60 volumes of the Avatamsaka Sutra (J., Kegonkyô) from a total of 80.
