Overview

Monk Mending Cloths in the Morning Sun

Museum No.
AK817

Painted in a barely visible tone of light ink, a monk is shown seated on the ground mending a piece of worn cloth. It is likely that it was originally paired with its pictorial counterpart “Reading the Sutra by Moonlight.” The inscription is by a Chan monk from Ningbo, China. His seal reads: “Dongsou.”
