Unlined children's furisode with no added lapels to the body panels are suitable for the beginning of summer. A willow and swallow decorate the shoulders, while a pond with blooming water lilies and swimming carps makes up the area from the waist to the hem. In this piece, the almost total absence of thin white resist lines typically used to separate one color from another in yûzen dyeing enhances the pictorial effect. With innovations such as colored paste (J., utsushi yûzen) and preparing cloth with soybean liquid whose protein solidifies when heated making it possible to paint directly on the fabric (mamegaki yûzen), the white thread lines for color separation became unnecessary, opening up the possibility of more painterly expression.
