The draping makie decoration on this box resembles metal fittings with heart-shaped openings called “boar’s eyes.” The red areas between the upper and lower décor are of lacquer-coated hemp cloth. A medieval record describes “red-cornered” cases as holding incense ustensils, but no such examples survive from that time.
