Sanpôe (E., The Three Jewels) is a collection of Buddhist anecdotes compiled by Minamoto Tamenori (?-1011) for the daughter of Emperor Reizei (950-1011, r. 967-969). This work is a segment of an early manuscript of the collection's third volume. Originally in the book form of kochôsô ("butterfly binding"), the calligraphy is executed on karakami ("Chinese paper") undercoated with a decoration of interlinked circles in mica. It was copied in 1120, and the artwork is attributed to Minamoto Toshiyori (1055-1129). This fragment is called Tôdaiji gire ("Tôdaiji edition"), probably because it mentions Tôdai-ji Temple in the text, although the exact reason remains unknown.
