Among the paintings of "Scenes In and Around the Capital" (J., rakuchû rakugai zu), this work is classified as one from the second-phase group, in which Nijô Castle is the central subject for the left screen of a pair. This is one of the earliest productions of the second phase, probably made around 1606-1609 (the mid-Keichô era). It is unfortunate that the right screen, which illustrated the scenes of Rakuchû, the Kamo River, and Rakutô, has been lost. The work is, however, indispensable for research on paintings of "Scenes In and Around the Capital." It was probably made by Kanô Mitsunobu (1561-1608), who was the son of Kanô Eitoku (1543-96).
