This polychrome dish is a technically perfect piece of modern Japanese ceramics. As it was manufactured in Lord Nabeshima's kiln in what is today's Saga Prefecture, it is called Nabeshima ware or Nabeshima-style ware of the Arita porcelain category. Many of the Nabeshima wares are dishes and trays in the Mokuhai (wooden cup) style, of which this piece, a so-called 'Shichisun', is a typical example. The camellia trunk is depicted in the left side, using the Sometsuke (cobalt blue underglaze painting) and Uwae (overglaze enamels) methods. The depiction is energetic, and the color gradations and the composition are excellent. The back of the tray is decorated with a Shippotsunagi pattern, and a Kushime-style foot is attached.
